Metal and water are not friends. However, in the case of magnet fishing, they are inseparable. If you followed our advice, you purchased a neodymium fishing magnet. Note that this material may be extra sensitive to rusting due to moisture. Therefore it is very important to properly clean and dry your fish magnet after use. Fortunately, you can learn how to do that right here.

Clean your fishing magnet the right way.

Cleaning your fishing magnet in six steps

Follow the steps below to clean your fish magnet. Make it a habit to do this every time after you have been fishing.

  1. Clean the fishing magnet as well as you can immediately after fishing by removing mud, water plants, etc.
  2. Dry the fish magnet well and take it home.
  3. At home, rinse the magnet well under the tap to remove even the smallest contaminants.
  4. Dry the fish magnet well.
  5. If necessary, spray the fish magnet with a protective spray. WD40 is very suitable for this purpose.
  6. Wipe off any excess oil with a cloth and store the fishing magnet in a dry place.

What you need

To properly clean your fishing magnet and protect it from rust, you don’t need very much:

  • A towel at the place where you fish.
  • A towel for drying at home.
  • A spray can of WD40.
  • A case, box, case, or crate to store your fishing magnet. It is important that no moisture or air can get to it. Magnetar packs its fish magnets in a nice box, which is very suitable to transport the magnet safely. There are also special magnet fishing cases for sale, in which your fishing magnet fits with all the rope. Don’t have any rope yet? Buy a magnet fishing rope at Magnetar.

What cleaning products are better to avoid?

Most neodymium fish magnets have a housing made of stainless steel. When cleaning them, there are a few things you should not do:

  • Don’t dry your fishing magnet in the oven. Neodymium absolutely cannot withstand high temperatures.
  • Do not use a scouring pad or steel wool to remove stubborn dirt. It will scratch the surface and that would be a shame. An old toothbrush is a safe and adequate alternative for this.
  • Do not use acidic or salty cleaning agents and especially not bleach. These cause stains on the stainless steel that won’t come off. A lather with a mild soap works just fine.

In a nutshell

If there were a bible for maintaining your precious fishing magnet, these would be the five commandments:

  • Clean and dry your fishing magnet as much as possible immediately after fishing.
  • At home, make sure your fishing magnet is completely clean and dry.
  • Do not use harsh detergents or hard cleaning materials.
  • Treat your fishing magnet with a protective spray.
  • Store your fishing magnet dry and airtight.
